Winter is nearly here. Can you believe it? A few minutes ago, we were complaining about the heat.
But that’s the way it is, we suppose. We can’t improve the weather. All we can do is prepare for it. And one of the most critical places to prepare is lawn care.
So, is your lawn ready for the winter? Would you know if it was? If not, we at Fair Lawn forecast a significant knowledge front coming in from the south. So, be sure to read the following few paragraphs to be ready for the coming winter weather.
Why Worry About Lawn Care In Winter?
Ok, let’s talk about the frost giant in the room. We don’t mow the lawn in winter because our lawn doesn’t grow in the winter.
Why do we need to prepare for the winter?
Just because your grass isn’t growing doesn’t mean it can’t get damaged over the course of the winter. Like a bear, your lawn will be dormant, but it still needs some care before the winter starts.
The Final Cut
Before the first frost, we must mow your lawn one last time. And the length is critical!
If you cut your grass too short, its roots won’t have the blades protecting them from the cold. That cold can damage or kill your grass.
On the other hand, if you leave grass too long, it can collapse in on itself, suffocating parts of the lawn and risking trapping water which can then create lawn disease, mold, and ice.
Seasonal Cleanups
We’ve been working on seasonal cleanups for several weeks now, and while you may not consider that lawn care, it is vital to the health of your lawn.
Leaves and other plant debris that built up over the previous seasons must be hauled away periodically. This is always essential for your lawn, but it is even moreso for the winter.
Why?
Autumn is the season that creates the most plant debris. So not only do you have all the regular branches and leaves from plants’ life cycles, but you also have the briefly lovely fall foliage.
Like the too-long grass discussed in the previous section, plant debris can trap moisture on your lawn. That trapped water risks freezing your grass and creating diseases. One specific lawn disease to worry about in the winter is snow mold.
That debris also blocks nutrients from reaching your lawn.
Weeds
While your grass hibernates for the winter so it’s ready for a healthy spring, weeds are doing the same, looking for the perfect opportunity to make your turf their turf.
The best way to weed is to prevent them from ever growing in the first place. We do that by keeping your lawn healthy. But we also do that with lawn treatments.
Preemergents
Now is the time for pre-emergents! As the name implies, pre-emergents work by targeting plants before they emerge. However, unlike other herbicides, preemergents don’t work on specific plants but at a particular stage in the plant life cycle.
Pre-emergents target plants that have become established yet and prevent them from ever sprouting. So we clear your lawn, keep it healthy, and then treat it with premergents, so it stays healthy.
What About the Rest of Your Property?
Of course, your lawn doesn’t live in a vacuum. The rest of your yard affects your lawn care, not to mention the aesthetic of your whole property. So we’re still taking care of the rest of your yard too.
Winterizing Trees
To keep your trees healthy, it’s time to give them a pruning. The pruning will ensure the dead or unhealthy branches aren’t wasting your plant’s energy so it can use that energy for the harsh winter.
In addition, pruning will prevent snow from breaking your less stable tree branches. That can cause property damage or, worse, hurt someone.
